She came to work for the Oregon Department of Veterans’ Affairs in January of 1979 and worked on the veteran’s home loan side of the agency for the first 12 years of her career. In 1991 she moved to the Veterans Services Division as a Veterans Service Officer and in 1996 became the manager of the Portland Claims office. In 2004 she was promoted to Administrator of the Veterans Services Division and effective June 1, 2011 she was appointed as the Deputy Director of the Oregon Dept. of Veterans’ Affairs.

Valerie was appointed and assumed the duties of the Oregon State Women Veterans Coordinator in 1998 and still serves in that capacity. Effective August 1, 2011, Valerie assumed the duties of President of the National Association of State Women Veterans Coordinator. She is a co-founder and Vice President of Disabled Veterans National Foundation.

Valerie is currently serving a second term on the Governor’s Ending Homelessness Advisory Committee and also sits on the Governor’s Re-Entry Council. She is currently a member of the American Legion and AmVets.

She is accredited by ODVA, Military Order of the Purple Heart, Jewish War Veterans, World War I Veterans of America, Non-Commissioned Officers Assn., Vietnam Veterans of America, Blinded Veterans Assn., American Red Cross and The Retired Enlisted Assn.
