Lynda Waldroop is a U.S. Navy Veteran (1961-1965). She was the first WAVE assigned by BUPERS to the U.S. Naval Air Facility, Andrews AFB, Washington, D.C. in 1961. She served in the Captain's Administration Office; YN2 Legal Yeoman/Certified Court Recorder; Top Secret Clearance Communications; Special Services. She flew often as part of Admiral Shroup's flight crew. She was the VIP Flight Steward Navy Liaison for Congressman Carl Albert, U.S. Speaker of The House who was third in command after the Kennedy assignation. Lynda is a graduate of The Atomic, Biological, Chemical Warfare School, Andrews AFB, 1962; and U.S. Naval Justice School, Newport, Rhode Island, 1963.
After her military service, Lynda worked as an Executive Secretary for the North American Judge's Association in Washington, D.C.
In late 1968, Lynda returned to Oklahoma to marry and raise a family. In the fall of 1973, Lynda began teaching at Weleetka, OK, which were her birthplace and a small rural town without many resources for children. In the local grade school she opened the first HEAD START as Teacher/Director with four teacher’s aides and two social work students from the University of Oklahoma. They integrated handicapped and non-handicapped children of different social backgrounds. She worked with the Children's Hospital, Tulsa, OK in obtaining free medical care for children, which included 7 major surgeries. Lynda taught until 1979. She won a Teacher of the Year award for teaching minority culture; 3/4 of her class were Native American.
Lynda quit teaching in the Spring of 1979 and attended school full time, while doing a lot of volunteer work for the Veterans Organizations in eastern Oklahoma. She started work with the Oklahoma Department of Veterans Affairs as Veterans Service Representative Claims and Benefits in 1980. For twenty-three years she covered a ten county itinerary on a daily basis in Eastern Oklahoma. Her last assignment was Senior Supervisor of the Claims and Benefits Office, VA Hospital, Muskogee, OK. She has been the Oklahoma State Women Veterans Coordinator since 1984. She has won numerous awards during this career on local, state, and federal levels. She received the first Oklahoma Senate Award For Outstanding Achievement In Women's Advocacy; Oklahoma War Commission Awards For Outstanding Employee ODVA 1986,1996, and 2008. She has been a member of the VA Medical Advisory Board for Muskogee and Tulsa since 1998 as Women Veterans Representative. Lynda is the Women Veterans Representative of U.S. Senator Jim Inhofe's Veterans Task Force.
Lynda originated and co-founded the Oklahoma State Women Veterans Appreciation Day in 1984 and continues till today, each first Saturday of November. She was awarded the first Oklahoma Woman Veteran of The Year award by State Veterans Organizations in 1985.
Lynda was Oklahoma Coordinator for the Vietnam Women's Memorial; and later became Central-Southern Coordinator for eight states. She served as The National Woman Veterans Representative for The National Association of County Veterans Services Officers/Executive Board from 1995-2003. She was awarded Medal of Valor by 569 Native American tribes at Pearl Harbor in 2007 for her work with Native American Veterans on reservations. She also serves on The Disabled Veterans National Executive Board.
Lynda is the founder and past National President of The National Association of State Women Veteran Coordinators. She currently serves as President Emeritus to the Executive Board.
In her spare time through the years, Lynda has been the Executive Director of The Miss Oklahoma/Lake Eufaula Scholarship Pageant (1986-2001), Miss Oklahoma and Miss America Certified Judge. She was The University of Oklahoma's Alpha Phi Sorority Mom's Club President for 3 years, OU Mom's Club Vice President, Advisor of New Eastern Oklahoma students 2 years and a member of The National Waves Chorus, Washington, D.C.
In 1980 Lynda married Ollen Waldroop, a Veteran of the WWII Battle of The Bulge. She has 13 grand-children and six great-grandchildren. She is also in the planning stages of writing a book and wants to spend more time with her Veteran sisters.
